My friend’s grandma, born in 1909, raised two children herself after her husband died when she was only 25 and kids only 1 & 3 years old. With bounded feet (小脚), she could not do the farm work, so she started to learn hand making firecrackers and sell it to support the family and her children to go school which was very rare at the time in the local village with the living condition. This work involves 20+ major steps, which is not easy to do. Later on, the whole family worked every night to make firecrackers. This work lasted for twenty plus years, now the new generations are able to go to universities and living overseas because of her many years of hard work and determination to bring family to happiness and prosperity.
